What is an unvented hot water cylinder?

The unvented hot water cylinder does not require a storage tank and is connected directly to the mains supply.

When the water is heated any excess will be diverted to an expansion tank, which is part of the same system.

This type of heating system obviously needs less space and as the cylinder is supplied directly by the mains, it is likely to have stronger water pressure.

Although this type of system does have advantages it is not always compatible with certain other appliances such as power showers.

Torquay plumbers engineers are able to advise about which system is the best suited for any type of property and can undertake installation work on both types of system.

What is a vented hot water cylinder?

A vented hot water cylinder requires a water storage tank fed from the mains, and is situated in the loft.

Gravity allows water to flow down to the hot water cylinder, which is very often situated in an airing cupboard, by means of a vent pipe.

When the water is in the cylinder it is heated for use in taps or radiators or will be stored for later use.

When water is heated it expands and so there needs to be some way it can escape or overflow, hence the vent pipe to the tank in the loft.

The downside to this system is that it relies on gravity for the flow rate of water to taps.

However, should there be an occasion when the water supply is disconnected you will still have a tank full of water.

Vented + Unvented Hot Water Cylinder Repairs.

Installation of a vented system requires more components but can be less expensive.

However, an unvented system, which will need less space, is more complex and could work out to be a more expensive installation.

Both cylinder systems can be equally serviced and repaired if necessary.

The vented system may at some stage require more repair or replacement works due to the additional tank and vents.

There are positives and negatives for both systems but both work effectively, providing a steady provision of hot water and heating.
